I’ve lived in Portugal since fall 2021, and I have become quite familiar with the nightlife in Lisbon in that time. While I am not big into clubbing, I love a good bar. I love a perfectly poured cocktail or a unique glass of wine, I love unique decor, gorgeous bar staff, and — depending on my mood, I love an intimate conversation or some sweaty bodies. Based all on my experience and the bars I have been to and loved, here are the 15 best bars in Lisbon — from crowded to intimate, laid back to swanky, date night to day drinking.

Map of the best bars in Lisbon

Baixa-Chiado

Pensão Amor

What’s the vibe: Great for a big night out

Address: R. do Alecrim 19

Price: Cocktails for €11+

Pensão Amor is on the famous pink street, a bed of complete tourist depravity. And to be honest, it is not a place I would really recommend you go spend time in Lisbon. However, Pensão Amor is one of the coolest bars in Lisbon. Go in, go out, don’t linger on pink street, there is hardly anywhere else worth going.

Pensão Amor — house of love — named as such in honor of its former business, a brothel — is a multi-floor venue, each floor with several rooms. On any given night there are DJs and live acts, these might be pole dancers, circus acts, bands, or singers. There is chaos and happiness and dancing and sweating and drinks. Have fun!

BacoAlto

What’s the vibe: Laidback and unpretentious

Address: R. do Norte 33

Price: Wine by the glass for €4+

bar with a wall of wines and wooden tables

This is a completely unassuming little wine bar in a very touristy neighborhood. It is locally owned and attracts regular, reliable clientele. The owner is friendly and welcoming and will recommend a bottle for you to try. Along with the extensive wine selection there are also small plates to share.

There are simple wooden tables and chairs and the decor is nothing to write home about. But if you’re looking for something very classically Portuguese that has a slightly elevated drink offering, this is the spot to choose.

This is the perfect place to pause your day of sightseeing in Lisbon and enjoy an afternoon snack and tipple.

Zé dos Bois gallery

What’s the vibe: Hipster, artsy, sweaty

Address: R. da Barroca 59

Price: Drinks from €5+

This is a large gallery and event space which hosts music, performance, and visual arts acts. The atmosphere is aiming to be alternative but lands squarely amongst the predictable hipsters. There are tattoos and piercings everywhere, and depending on how late you arrive there is a thick sweat in the air.

Outside is the perfect escape from the heat of all the bodies. Out there you’ll find a lovely terrace with a view over the street. You can grab a drink from the bar and enjoy some fresh air along with it.

The shows do have entrance fees, so check the website for what’s on while you’re in town. Perhaps go have a dance, or just a drink.

Toca da Raposa

What’s the vibe: Swanky, posh, date night

Address: R. da Condessa 45

Price: €13+

This is another favorite of mine on the list of best bars in Lisbon. The offerings on their menu I believe make them one of the best cocktail bars in Lisbon. The drinks are delicate, balanced, and purposeful in their flavors. The menu changes regularly with new, unique creations.

The bar space is sleek and swanky with clean edges and minimalist furniture. I would personally not take anyone here on a first date, but for a third date? The perfect spot to lean in for that lingering kiss.

There is not a huge amount of seating but there are a few perfectly intimate spots. There is also usually fairly loud music playing, this adds to the swanky vibe, but isn’t super conducive to conversation.

146 Bar

What’s the vibe: Business classy, hotel bar

Address: Rua do Arsenal 146

Price: Cocktails €12+

two cocktails lined up on a bar

146 Bar is attached to the Corpo Santo Hotel, and while it does definitely give hotel bar vibes in terms of its interior, the drinks are worth going for.

When I first visited, their featured cocktails were each named after the seven deadly sins. I ordered a “sloth” and had a sugar image of Homer Simpson with his belly out floating atop my cocktail. Their more recent menu has a cocktail each representing the seven wonders of the world.

The bartenders are experienced and well versed in how to create the perfect mix for each pour.

As well as drinks, there is an extensive food menu making this a great spot for a a lunch or dinner in Lisbon.

Noobai – Rooftop Bar e Restaurante

What’s the vibe: Great views

Address: Miradouro de Santa Catarina S/N

Price: Cocktails for €8+

view of the lisbon river from a rooftop bar

The singular reason to go to Noobai is the view — this is easily one of the best rooftop bars Lisbon has to offer simply because of it. But make sure you get a table that has that view. The bar’s upper terrace looks out over the water and towards the Setubal region. To make sure you don’t miss out, you can reserve a table in advance.

I don’t think there is anything extraordinary about the menu here. There are extensive cocktail options, wines, beers, cocktails, sangrias. And there are also quite a lot of food options. You can get soups, salads, sandwiches, fish, even breakfast dishes.

But again, can’t snag a table with a view? Move on to the next spot.

Javá

What’s the vibe: Trendy rooftop with good views

Address: Praça Dom Luís I 30

Price: Cocktails for €10+

hiding up a drink in a rooftop bar against the night sky

Soulless but beautiful — that’s how I would describe this rooftop bar. It noy only has stunning views across the river and over to the Jesus statue in Almada, it is also very nicely decorated with plenty of lounge-like seating and dim mood lighting throughout. It’s the type of vibe where you might get a good looking stranger to grind up against you, but you’re probably not going to want to engage that good looking stranger in a conversation because they’re not going to have a lot to say.

As well as an extensive selection of drinks, there are also plenty of food options for a meal with a view.

Rato

Imprensa Cocktail and Oyster Bar

What’s the vibe: Hipster & friendly, perfect for happy hour

Address: R. da Imprensa Nacional 46

Price: Cocktails for €9+

Come for the oysters, stay for the vibes. This is one of  my favorite bars in Lisbon, Portugal. Everything they have to offer is delicious, if you’re an oyster eater, don’t pass up the ones they have on offer.

The cocktails are also excellent, well shaken, and creative. For something simple but delicious, try the Fitzgerald. Or if you like smoky Mezcal, go for a Baskerville. Imprensa has two locations. The spot I listed above is the one I go to — it is a small space, a sort of wide hallway with a bar on one side. Once happy hour rolls around it is full. People spill out onto the sidewalk where you can still drink and be served. There is an alternative location in Rato  — R. da Imprensa Nacional 46.

Sneaky Sip

What’s the vibe: Quirky and unique

Address: R. de Gustavo de Matos Sequeira 42A

Price: Cocktails for €11+

bartender behind mixers stacked on the bar

The idea here is that it’s a sort of speakeasy — the door is almost entirely unmarked and you have to ring the doorbell for someone to come up and let you in. But once you make your way down the stairs to the bar you’ll see it’s not your typical 1920’s speakeasy vibe. Instead it is marketed as a kind of mad scientist laboratory.

The space is full of dimly lit neons and black lights. The drinks on the menu are far from the expected (though you can still get classics if you really want). You can find something like the “Garlic” which features roasted garlic mezcal, or the “Cheese” with goat cheese soda.

IF IF IF Georgian food and natural wine bar

What’s the vibe: Friendly, laidback

Address: R. do Salitre 122b

Price: Bottles of wine for €11+

bar with wine bottles everywhere

If you’re looking for unique wine bars in Lisbon, this is a wonderful little local spot where you can try the incredibly unique Georgian wines. The owner, manager, and wine pourer is Georgian herself and she runs the business with a partner who is back in Georgia.

If you’re not sure what to get — which you likely aren’t if you’ve never tasted Georgian wine before — she will gladly walk you through the different taste profiles in her offerings.

There are only a few small tables in the bar, but that’s what makes it so nice, it’s very cozy and intimate in a comfortable, friendly way. On my visit I started chatting to the couple at the next table.

They also run events from time to time so keep a look out for those.

Procópio Bar

What’s the vibe: Smoky, moody, bohemian

Address: Alto de São Francisco 21

Price: Cocktails for €10+

dimly lit bar with stools and tables

A small unassuming red door with almost no signage at the back of a small paved courtyard leads to the dimly lit Procópio Bar. I love a bar like this, it just drips with character. There is lush red velvet all over the place, just enough lighting so you don’t trip, but certainly not enough to allow you to see anyone’s pores. The lamps are trimmed in tassels and every inch of the walls are covered in framed pictures, plates, or some other sort of something.

As well as a great selection of drinks, there is also a small food menu.

Campolide

Metro e Meio restaurante cocktail bar

What’s the vibe: After work crowd, drinks with friends

Address: Avenida 5 de Outubro 174A

Price: Cocktails €10+

If you’re looking for one of the cool bars in Lisbon, this little restaurant bar has a really neat interior with stone archways. It’s dimly lit and gives very pub adjacent vibes. There is a fairly extensive food menu so it’s a good spot to go if you’re looking for a drink along with dinner.

There’s not a lot of mingling and certainly no dancing here. It’s more of a sit down at your table with your group, place, so it’s good for a laidback date or after work drinks with friends.

While it’s all very no fuss, their cocktail menu is actually quite nice and they pour a good drink.

Bairro Alto

Associação Loucos e Sonhadores

What’s the vibe: Late night but make it chill

Address: R. da Rosa 261

Price: Cocktails for €6+

You know when you’ve been out for a while and you’re tipsy but not drunk and you’re having fun and even though it’s late you don’t want to go home? Associação Loucos e Sonhadores is your dream come true in that moment. It’s like you’re at a late night club, except you’re sitting at a table with only your group and you’re being served drinks.

But because everyone else is on your level, the whole place might break out in song, or you might befriend the people at the table behind you, or you might go out front for a smoke and fall in love — but let’s be real it’s only for the night.

To top all of this sweet perfection off with a cherry, the drinks are affordable and there’s food to be had. Certainly this is one of the top bars in Lisbon for the late night crew.

Terreiro do Paço

Outro Lado Craft Beer

What’s the vibe: Eclectic, good for a day drink

Address: Beco do Arco Escuro 1

Price: ½ pints for €6+

three bars in glasses on a bar

I am not a beer drinker, so I am rather unappreciative of what are actually quite nice, craft beers (so says my beer-loving friend who brought me here). While there are beers from all over the world, many of the beers on tap are the bar’s own brand, brewed here in Lisbon.

Beyond the beer, the space is fun and comfy. There are board games to be played, and an assortment of quasi-comfortable, quasi-questionable seating. This is one of the more fun bars in Lisbon, you could definitely imagine having a few too many with friends just chatting and enjoying yourselves here throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Martim Moniz

TOPO Martim Moniz

What’s the vibe: Day drinking millennials on a rooftop

Address: Centro Comercial, Praça Martim Moniz Piso 6

Price: Cocktails for €10+

holding up a red cocktail on a rooftop bar in front of a view across lisbon rooftops

Expats. Millennials. Expat millennials. This is the immediate vibe I got when I walked into this rooftop bar. It feels like I could be backpacking, in Thailand, maybe Bali, circa 2016. Do I love it? Do I hate it? I have no idea.

But the views are great, the seating is comfy, the cocktails go down easy.

Something I did really like about this bar is that it’s in one of the neighborhoods that are considered to be “less desirable” in Lisbon. That I believe keeps many of the less seasoned tourists away — so with a view as spectacular as this rooftop has you would expect more of a crowd, but it’s just not here.

Lisbon is a really fun city and there are lots of corners to explore — down cobblestone alleyways, up windy staircases. I hope you enjoy your night (or nights) out at the best bars in Lisbon.
